In Guyana local people practise shifting cultivation, moving their garden onto
a new plot of land every year, rotating round the village on a 14 year cycle.
They cut an acre of forest, let it dry and the burn it to provide fertility from
the ashes. Staple crops such as cassava and sweet potato are then planted
for most of the year.
